Grado is a Brooklyn based company that hand makes headphones and cartridges. Family run since 1953, Grado has seen three generations: Joseph, John, Jonathan and Matthew Grado. The family has kept the tradition of putting sound first.

Grado specialises in dynamic open-air, supra-aural, high-fidelity headphones. For over 60-years, Grado has relied on word-of-mouth among audio dealers and consumers instead of mass advertising campaigns to build their reputation and sales. All Grado products are still hand-crafted to this day in Brooklyn, New York.

Introducing Grado

Grado, or more formally, Grado Labs, makes phono cartridges and headphones. The headphones are a relatively recent addition to its portfolio, dating from the 1990s. It all started with the cartridges way back in 1953.

Grado is one of the rare audio companies which has both been around for a long time and hasn’t been swallowed up by some multinational. And it still hand builds all its products in Brooklyn, New York.

And it doesn’t advertise in the usual way. Instead, it relies on word of mouth.

Grado is still run by the Grado family.
