Why Electrostatic Heaphones?
Electrostatic headphones operate on a different principle than conventional "dynamic" or "moving coil" designs. In a conventional headphones there is a coil of wire inside a magnet, generally glued to a stiff cone or dome that's held in place with a springy suspension. This makes in more difficult to re-create detail in playback due to mass. Or to put simply there are more heavy moving parts.
Pioneered by Stax in 1959 – an electrostatic design works by placing a static (non-moving) electric charge on a film that floats between two perforated metal plates. When audio voltages are applied across the plates, static cling and repulsion causes the entire film to move by itself. This film is so thin, it effectively weighs less than the air around it, and has no resonances or energy storage which leads to distortion inherent in moving coil speakers.
These factors are one of many reasons why Stax electrostatic Headphones sound so much better than conventional designs. During play back the listener is experiencing minimal interference from the headphone speaker itself, in turn bringing you that much closer to the original artist’s performance.
SR-L300 Earspeakers + SRM-252S Amplifier
The SRS-3100 Earspeaker system is Stax's ‘entry level’ Electrostatic Headphone System. It slots in bellow the SRS-5100 but don’t worry, there’s nothing remotely entry level in terms of musical performance. The combination of the new SR-L300 Earspeakers and dedicated SRM-252S driver provides an access pass to a superb electrostatic headphone experience with an amazing 7-41,000Hz frequency response!

Top-quality sound element - Tough fixed electrodes machined through stainless photo etching has also been employed for the SR-L300. Thus rich deep bassresponse, delicate high-frequency and soothing mid-range have been realized in a balanced manner.
Slide-type arc assembly - The arc assembly of the SR-L300 is equipped with stepless slider mechanism for head-pad height adjustment.
New low-capacitance OFC - wide cable OFC cable has been employed for the core wires and the whole cable uses special wide parallel structure to lower the capacitance between each wire strand.
High-quality artificial leather ear pad - The high-quality flexible artificial leather ear pad contributes not only to improve the wear feeling, but also to enhance the "freshness of sound" and "the grace of sound."
Driver unit - SRM-252S
The SRM-252S is an exclusive driver unit (amplifier) for driving STAX ear speakers with PRO-bias 5 pins. Its line input can directly connect to the audio output terminal of CD player, portable audio player and PC. The SRM-252S has a simple design that excels in sound quality employing the carefully selected newest high-voltage transistors and low-noise FETs. The output stage featuring the emitter-follower configuration reinforces the driving performance and also realized the smooth sound quality. Moreover, the class-A amplification throughout the stages with no coupling capacitors reproduces exhaustively the finest nuance of music. Although the SRM-252S includes a class-A DC amplifier in a compact CD jacket size case, the internal heat is effectively dissipated through the chassis of aluminum extrusion material to improve the reliability over a long period of time. Also, the parallel output terminal was added to distribute the source signal so that a loud speaker may also be simultaneously used when source equipment has only a pair of output terminals.
