Grado Labs founder, Joseph Grado, created what many consider to be the high-end headphone market with the release of the Signature HP1 headphones in the early 1990s. To celebrate Joseph Grado’s 100th birthday and this industry milestone, Grado Labs is proud to introduce the HP100 SE Special Edition headphones.
“Although Uncle Joe left us 10 years ago, he will always be a presence at Grado Labs,” says Joseph’s nephew and Grado’s CEO, John Grado.
While the HP100 SE pays homage to Grado’s storied past, these headphones are a modern reimagining of a true classic. Featuring newly engineered drivers, detachable cables, and an updated headband assembly, the HP100 SE represents an exciting new direction for Grado. As always, these headphones are meticulously hand-assembled at Grado’s Brooklyn-based headquarters.
New Speaker Design
At the core of the HP100 SE is a completely new speaker design. Grado aimed to create a 52mm driver capable of delivering exceptional high-frequency resolution, smooth midrange, and robust bass, all with minimal distortion. This results in a sound profile that is both musically and harmonically accurate.
The new driver features a paper composite cone paired with a powerful high-flux magnetic circuit, crafted from rare earth alloys, and a lightweight copper-plated aluminum voice coil. This combination produces dynamic sound with excellent transient response and an impressive sense of space, soundstage, and imaging.
Modern Housing with Detachable Cables
Honouring the iconic design of the original Signature HP1/2/3 headphones, the HP100 SE features individually machined housings from specially treated aluminum, engraved with the product name, and finished in a stylish space grey.
This is also the first Grado model with detachable cables, offering flexibility for users. The cable is engineered with a soft, durable braided finish that enhances flexibility and reduces weight. Terminated with a 6.3mm plug, it connects to each housing via a 4-pin mini XLR plug. Additional options, including 4-pin XLR and 4.4mm balanced terminations, will be available, allowing users to choose cables based on source requirements and preferred length.
Redesigned Headband Assembly
The HP100 SE’s headband assembly introduces a significant update for comfort during extended listening sessions. It includes 50% more padding than previous models, with a stainless steel band and adjustable height rods for a customised fit, reducing listening fatigue.
Grado Labs engraved gimbals are crafted from aluminum alloy, while the stainless steel height rods offer enhanced stability at connection points. These rods are also designed to remain securely in place, with a mechanism that limits housing rotation to 105 degrees, reducing wear and tear on the headphones.
The HP100 SE stands as a testament to Grado’s commitment to innovation while respecting the legacy of Joseph Grado’s visionary approach to audio design.
